Castor oil is unique among vegetable oils — about 90% ricinoleic acid, the only commercial fatty acid with a hydroxyl group. That OH makes it polar, hydrogen-bonding, and ideal as a feedstock for surfactants, polyols, polymers and specialty excipients. Five core roles:
Soft-gel capsule fill, oral laxative, ophthalmic vehicle, API solvent. USP/BP/EP compliant. PEG-derivatives (Cremophor-type) solubilise IV drugs.

High-temperature biodegradable lubricants, hydraulic fluids, two-stroke engine oils. Hydrogenated castor (HCO) and 12-HSA are workhorse grease thickeners.
Bio-based polyols for polyurethane (flexible/rigid foam, elastomers, coatings). Sebacic-acid route to nylon 6,10 / 6,12. Plasticiser for cellulose nitrate.
Dehydrated Castor Oil (DCO) is a fast-drying alkyd resin modifier — renewable alternative to linseed/tung oil for paints, varnishes and printing inks.
